Work with me!

It’s never too late! Be the improviser you want to be! Yes, you! Work with me (15 year improv veteran), have fun and improve your improv. I love coaching teams and one on one! I give kind, direct actionable feedback that you can use right away. Cool right? Let’s play! I coach and teach from an Annoyance Theater point of view—strong choices made at the top of scene. Strong choices snaps you into the scene and out of fear! Unafraid, you’ll make more interesting choices-have more fun-and improve your scene work. Improv can and should be easy and fun! Be the amazing improviser everyone wants to play with. I’m thrilled to coach narrative-based trio Upstaged. And I’d be thrilled to coach you too. Don’t wait! Improve your improv today! Contact me to get started.

I’m a high energy improviser with 15 years of improv experience. As a performer, I filter my characters through strong choices, emotional intelligence, game and physicality. I’m the shorter half of narrative dynamic duo Disco Lemonade Improv and musical improv group Sounds Good to Me. Need a short upbeat improviser? Contact me.

I taught my Annoyance Theater based curriculum Forward Focus, Forward Focus Plus and the Harold Forward Focus style at CSz Richmond Theater. It delivered strong easy- to-use scenic devices that invigorated my students. Need an improv teacher who gets results? Contact me.

Imagine this, you’re in an improv scene and yes-anding like crazy and your scene is dying a slow death. Yes-and isn’t always enough. Trust me, I’ve been there. Work with me to make clear decisive improv choices. Improv should be fun and feel empowering. Making strong choices really helps all scene work.

I started coaching teams and one on one in 2017 and I started teaching Forward Focus curriculum in 2019 at Richmond CSz theater.

“I loved this class! Betzi has great energy & kindness while challenging us to rise above ourselves!" Susan Scovill

I thoroughly enjoyed performing in Carolyn Cole’s Wildcard show Sat Jan. 20 1920 at the PIT Chapel Hill, NC. My performance (I won!) can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wopwIn31pFs

My past improv groups include Harold team Temp Tag, indie group Touchy Feely, short form team Short, Fast and Furious. Currently, I make ‘em up with musical improv group Sounds good to me, and as one half of duo Disco Lemonade Improv. discolemonadeimprov.com

I can not recommend this class highly enough. Betzi Hekman is a great teacher and coach, and her side coaching is invaluable. I’ve taken two classes with her and found them to be challenging and fun. Betzi really helped deepen my view of Improv, character development and, to an extent, self development.” Patrick Bruckhart

“I loved Betzi’s Forward Focus and Forward Focus Plus improv classes. The classes focused on long form skills, but the skills we learned can easily be applied to short form as well. Betzi’s personalized feedback helped me gain confidence and grow as an improviser, and I cannot recommend her classes strongly enough." Amy Weiss

“Betzi Hekman is a wonderful improv coach! She is always supportive and gives insightful feedback in an affirming, inspiring manner. She has great awareness of every moment in a scene, and how to use those moments to take your improvisation to an incredible level. I highly recommend her as an instructor.” Donna Walker

"I have taken two Improv classes with Betzi Hekman and I'm ready for a third. Her high energy coaching style has been tremendous. She has taught some big concepts. But just as important, her side coaching has helped me correct some of those annoying little habits that have held me back during scenes. I happily recommended Betzi as an improv teacher, coach and mentor." Bill Nieporte
